What Should My Baby Wear For Newborn Photo Session?

There are so many adorable outfits for every style and taste, and I am sure you have a closet full of cute clothes for your baby. But what should a baby wear for the newborn photos is the question I often get. 

Newborn photos are not about capturing an outfit. Lifestyle newborn photography is about capturing your baby as they are, their sweet tiny details, and your love and bond with that baby as a family. 

Of course you want them to look cute and what they wear is important, but the focus will not be on what they wear. 

So what should baby wear for newborn photos?

Dress baby in a plain, well-fitting onesie

Well-fit is every important. As anything too big will just look sloppy. A well fit onesie will allow us to see the baby details, and for you to snuggle close and not to constantly worry about pulling the outfit down. 

Dress baby in neutrals as they photograph best 

“Plain” is the idea here. Solid colors -white, pink, blue, grey, beige are all good colors that are neutral and won’t distract from the cute details of the baby. No matter the baby skin tone, these neutral colors will allow the baby to stand out. Newborns tend to be a little red or yellow in their coloring and bright colors can leave color casts (meaning- the light will bounce off the outfit and will reflect on their skin). Neutrals are classic and timeless - making sure your photos will age well leaving the focus on baby and your family. 

Swaddles are also great to incorporate

Swaddles are very nice to use as well and give you an option of a different look. You can use a printed or colored swaddled that looks good with the neutral outfit you chose. You can use a swaddle for a couple of photos and then move on to a same or different neutral  outfit for the rest of the session. Babies also love to be swaddles tightly if they’re fussy, so having ones that photograph well is a great idea.

Should baby wear bows for newborn photos?

A bow is okay for newborn photos however, keep my first two tips in mind. You want bow to be well-fitting and neutral. Bows should be soft and tiny and not too large or tight. Remember, the point of newborn photos is NOT the outfit!

My favorite way to photograph your newborn baby? Naked in a diaper. This way we will capture their cute toes, feet, belly and belly button. Simple and classic. Those images will stand the test of time.
